Discover The Guitar ! - Flute and Guitar Page

From 1998 to 2003 I played flute and guitar duets with fellow teacher and performer Sophie Maw. It was interesting exploring the repertoire - we performed our first full concerts in July 1999 and a CD of our music ("Lazy Summer") was recorded in August 2000. Please visit the .MP3 page to listen to some of the pieces .

Concerts.
Our first recitals were at the Buxton Festival Fringe in July 1999 and in 2002 we performed two recitals as part of the Derby Jubilee Festival .
We received the very flattering review below at one of our first performances in Buxton :

Old Hall Hotel, Buxton. July 11th 1999
. " I like flutes and I like guitars and together these instruments work brilliantly, so this recital on a hot Sunday afternoon in a cool room at the Old Hall Hotel was bliss and very much needed. Nursing a post-campfire hangover, I went (gin and tonic in hand) to be impressed and inspired by two quite amazing musicians.

Sophie Freeman and Philip Castledine are music tutors at Repton School in Derbyshire and have been performing as a duo for about a year. They played a varied programme of duets from the seventeenth century to the present day, mixing traditional folk inspired pieces with South American tangos and contemporary ballads. Despite the acoustic limitations in the small, carpeted room, the music was played beautifully, the technically challenging pieces performed with ease. My favouite piece was the opening "Suite in E Minor" by (the unpronounceable) Loeillet de Gant, although the piece by Poulenc, originally for horns, was very impressive.

They have a second performance on the 22nd of July at 1.15pm and I would urge you to go if you can - in a hectic round of festival activity Sophie and Philip can provide a quiet and calming oasis. You`ll feel cool and cultured, trust me." JG

Thank you JG, whoever you are !
